Kawaii Stickers

Assignment:

Create a Kawaii styled sticker of a food of your choice.  Your kawaii drawing must have:

  • clearly represent a food of choice

  • have a face (with eyes and mouth)

  • Use thick and thin lines/strokes

  • a clearly defined color harmony

  • Shading

  • A thick white outline with a thing gray outline around it (to cut along)

Kawaii  is the culture of cuteness in Japan. It can refer to items, humans and non-humans that are charming, vulnerable, shy and childlike.


How to submit:

  1. Choose Artboard tool or click "Edit Artboards" in Properties panel.  Resize artboard to:Width: 4.25 in.
    Height: 5.5 in.

  2. Show Rulers: View> Rulers>Show RulersMake sure rulers display as inches: Right-click on ruler> choose Inches

  3. Select All (CTRL + A)

  4. Convert everything to a shape: Object> Path> Outline Stroke

  5. Using the "selection tool" (v) hold SHIFT and resize your sticker to fill up the artboard

  6. Export: File> Export> Export As>Name: Last, First_sticker
    Format: SVG

  7. Submit as .SVG on Canvas

NOTE:  You should also save as a .PNG for your records (i.e. portfolio).  To do so, choose File>Export>Export As> Format: PNG.  Under "PNG Options" choose a background color of "Transparent".  Keep all other defaults


How to add a white border to your sticker:

  1. Select All: (Ctrl +A) or (Select> All)

  2. Expand: (Object> Expand)

  3. Group: (Ctrl + G) or (Object> Group)

  4. Copy: (Ctrl + C) or (Edit> Copy)

  5. (choose one):

  6. Paste in Front: (Ctrl + F) or

  7. Paste in Back: (Ctrl + B)

  8. In layers panel, select back group

  9. Unite: (Pathfinder: Unite)

  10. Set stroke to black (properties panel)

  11. Offset Path: (Object> Path> Offset Path)

  12. Joins: Round

  13. Keep all other defaults

  14. Edit Artboard: (Shift + O) or (use properties panel)

  15. Width: 4 in

  16. Height: 5 in

  17. Resize:

  18. Move tool (v) + SHIFT to resize in proportion

  19. Resize your sticker to fill up most of the artboard (don’t have sticker touch edges)


How to export your sticker:

  1. Select All: (Ctrl +A) or (Select> All)

  2. File> Export Selection

  3. Choose file location

  4. Uncheck “Create subfolder”

  5. Rename Suffix to: your name_sticker

  6. Format: .SVG

  7. Export Asset
